Clinical Center Starts Two New ProjectsShands Jacksonville has begun construction on a new dialysis unit. The inpatient unit will be located on the fourth floor of the Clinical Center. Meanwhile, one floor up, the construction crews are creating a new pre- and post- procedure holding area for cath lab patients.
UF Proton Therapy InstituteThe University of Florida team at the UF Proton Therapy Institute, located on the Shands Jacksonville campus, treated their first patient in August 2006. The 98,000-square-foot facility is the Southeast’s first proton-beam therapy center. The revolutionary technology directs proton therapy to deliver very tightly defined, high doses of radiation to destroy tumors with little or no damage to adjacent healthy tissues. The therapy is used for patients with specific types of cancer – such as head, neck, lung, breast and prostate cancers.
Shands Wellness and Education Center and the Soutel Family Practice and Pediatric ClinicShands Jacksonville and UF celebrated the addition of two facilities in October. More than 10,000 people were invited to attend the grand-opening celebration of the Shands Wellness and Education Center and the Soutel Family Practice and Pediatric Clinic. Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, Councilwoman Mia Jones, Shands Jacksonville President Jim Burkhart and Robert Nuss, MD, UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville senior associate dean, spoke at the event. Both facilities are located in the same building in District 10, which is one of Jacksonville’s most underserved neighborhoods. “We are proud to provide more healthcare options to the people of District 10. Ultimately, this will result in fewer visits to our Emergency Department,” said Liz Means, Vice President of Community Affairs for Shands Jacksonville. Attendees were treated to lunch, a tour of the new facilities and free health screenings. Shands Jacksonville plans to open another wellness center in the Brentwood area in December. New Orthopaedic Unit
The new unit allows physicians and specialized nurses to work together and treat patients in a centralized area. Along with Cardiology and Neurology units, this is the third new dedicated patient unit to be unveiled at Shands Jacksonville in the last few months. New Cardio UnitShands Jacksonville’s heart patients now will benefit from numerous upgrades to the hospital’s new 26-bed cardio unit. The unit features all new equipment, including Nikon Kohden monitors and an improved call system. Almost all of the rooms are private, and instead of having a central nursing station, each pair of rooms has its own computer, phone and access to other needed equipment. Located on 5 north, the cardio unit is on the same floor as the cath and electrophysiology labs, providing patients with improved access to all of their heart care needs. New Neuro Unit Shands Jacksonville expanded its 18-bed neuro unit by adding 10 new beds for neurology and epilepsy patients. The neuro unit, which is housed on 4 North, features new epilepsy monitoring equipment. The equipment is located in a separate, dedicated room, allowing medical staff to continually monitor patients with cameras. Related News Releases |
