Inpatient Acute Care

For inpatient acute care rehab at Shands Rehab Centers, occupational, physical, and speech therapists work together to coordinate therapeutic interventions for pediatric and adult patients who are hospitalized.

First, care begins with an in-depth assessment of a patient's condition. Then, a therapist develops a customized treatment program that is directed toward making meaningful, practical and sustained changes in a patient's ability to function. Goals for therapy are developed with the patient and/or family member and are focused toward maximizing functional independence, preventing further movement and function deficits, and maintaining health.

Working in inpatient acute care at Shands, therapists are exposed to a wide range of inpatient areas including:

Intensive care units, including:
Multi-organ transplantation teams
Neurosurgical and neurological teams and medical surgical teams
Acute psychiatric stabilization units
A state-accredited Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) care center
A nationally-certified burn care center
