The residency in Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplantation at Shands at the University of Florida is an ASHP-accredited program which provides specialized training in the pharmaceutical care of patients with solid tumors and leukemia. During the 12-month program, the resident develops clinical practice skills through direct patient care and didactic learning. Teaching and research skills are also developed.

Program

The residency offers clinical practice at Shands at UF in several oncology areas. These include:

• Inpatient adult and pediatric medical oncology units
• Adult and pediatric oncology outpatient clinics
• Gynecologic oncology unit
• Bone marrow transplant unit and clinic
• Radiation therapy

Throughout the year, the resident is an integral part of the healthcare team for each service. The resident provides comprehensive pharmaceutical service, including pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information and intensive monitoring of each patient on service. The resident participates in all aspects of service, education and research in each clinical area.

The resident will be responsible for required rotations and will have the opportunity to explore elective rotations throughout the year.

While a resident at Shands at UF, each resident will:

• Staff an average of eight hours per week to include rotation through Oncology On-Call
• Gain teaching experience through formal and informal lectures to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staffs; individualized instruction to PharmD clerkship students, and participation in the Department of Pharmacy Services' staff development program
• Review and present a new drug pertinent to oncology practice, proposed for formulary addition, to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
• Present a major project at the Southeastern Regional Residency Conference in Athens, Ga.
• Conduct one medication utilization evaluation on a topic or drug pertinent to oncology/ hematology/ bone marrow transplantation
• Write at least one article for a national publication
• Make two formal presentations to the department

A required project, which will directly affect oncology patient care and the practice of hospital pharmacy, will enable the resident to develop skills in clinical research, study design and statistical analysis. The project should lead to a publishable paper.

Stipend

The resident receives a $42,500 stipend paid by Shands at UF. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Requirements

To be eligible for an Oncology Pharmacy residency at Shands at UF, you must meet the following requirements:

• Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college. The applicant should have completed a pharmacy practice residency or have strong hospital pharmacy experience before enrolling in this advanced residency program.
• Professional License: All residents will be required to take and pass the Florida Pharmacy Board Examination by June.
• Professional Experience: The successful candidate will have acquired hospital and clinical practice skills through an ASHP-accredited residency or equivalent experience.
• Interview: An on-site interview is required.
• Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
