The residency in Practice Management at Shands at the University of Florida is an ASHP-accredited program emphasizing leadership and management. The resident is placed in a progressive environment for the practice of pharmaceutical care, coupled with education and research.

Program

There is one resident position available in the area of Practice Management. The program is tailored to the resident's background and future plans. Areas of concentration include, but are not limited to:

• Departmental operations
• Human resource management
• Technology and information management
• Communications
• Financial planning and monitoring
• Cost accounting and productivity
• Quality initiatives and management

The resident will work directly with the director and other members of the pharmacy staff. The resident gains experience in supervising a departmental work group and contributes to pharmacy staffing coverage, an average of one shift a week. Strong emphasis is placed on developing leadership skills necessary in a pharmacy practice environment, which leads to improved patient outcomes.

While a resident at Shands at UF, each resident will:

• Complete a residency project
• Staff an average of eight hours per week
• Develop a major, publishable project, which will be completed by the end of the year
• Take administrative call on a predetermined schedule
• Present a major project at the Southeastern Regional Residency Conference in Athens, Ga.
• Make two formal presentations to the department
• Conduct one medication use evaluation

Stipend

The resident receives a $42,500 stipend paid by Shands at UF. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Selected and matched applicants will receive partial reimbursement for interview expenses, when accompanied by receipts, at the beginning of the residency year. Assistance with local expenses will be provided to all candidates interviewed.

Requirements

To be eligible for a Practice Management residency at Shands at UF, you must meet the following requirements:

• Academic: The applicant must have a PharmD, MS, or MBA.
• Professional License: All residents will be required to take and pass the Florida Pharmacy Board Examination by June.
• Professional Experience: The successful candidate will have acquired hospital and clinical practice skills through an ASHP-accredited residency or equivalent experience.
• Interview: An on-site interview is required.
• Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
