The purpose of this program is to develop expert skills and competencies in all aspects of drug information. This goal is met by fulfilling objectives established by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists.

Program

There is one drug information resident position available to an eligible candidate. The resident will receive balanced instruction in service, education and research. Service includes:

• Answering patient-specific drug information requests
• Evaluating drug literature and biostatistics
• Preparing drug evaluations and participating in the formulary process
• Producing written communication, such as newsletters and web pages
• Preparing medication use criteria
• Participating in the MUE process
• Staff an average of eight hours per week
• Complete a residency project

Teaching experience includes:

• Instructing individual students on the drug information rotation
• Contributing to the Department of Pharmacy Services' staff development program
• Lecturing in the College of Pharmacy (optional)

The resident may spend up to three months in elective rotations. The resident will gain experience in established programs associated with drug information practice, such as the Investigational Drug Service.

Stipend

The resident receives a $42,500 stipend paid by Shands at UF. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Benefits

Selected and matched applicants will receive partial reimbursement for interview expenses, when accompanied by receipts, at the beginning of the residency year. Assistance with local expenses will be provided to all candidates interviewed.

Requirements

To be eligible for a Drug Information residency at Shands at UF, you must meet the following requirements:

• Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college. The applicant should have completed a pharmacy practice residency or have strong hospital pharmacy experience before enrolling in this advanced residency program.
• Professional License: All residents will be required to take and pass the Florida Pharmacy Board Examination by June.
• Professional Experience: The successful candidate will have acquired hospital and clinical practice skills through an ASHP-accredited residency or equivalent experience.
• Interview: An on-site interview is required.
• Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
