Pet Visitation
Animals Heal Hearts Volunteer Program

In 1995, a Shands at the University of Florida registered nurse (RN) developed a pet visitation program. Volunteer Services welcomed the first pet visit on February 13, 1996. "Andy," an 11-year-old golden retriever, brought smiles to the very first patient at Shands to benefit from a pet visit. Since then, we have placed 67 pet visitation volunteers who have contributed almost 1,000 volunteer hours.

Behind each volunteer (human and canine) and every single volunteer hour, there is a story.  All of our pet visitation volunteers have great love for animals and a great desire to help our patients.

Studies show that pet visitation brings a threefold benefit:

  • Reduction of stress
  • Enhancement of self-esteem
  • Opportunity to express feelings

Our volunteers bring smiles to patients and staff. The presence of dogs in the hospital allows patients to feel more at home by giving them the opportunity to reminisce about their own dogs.  It's always a treat to experience the unconditional love that dogs provide our patients.  Dogs do not notice IVs, bandages, burns, or dressing gowns.

We are looking for pet visitation volunteers who are willing to give two hours weekly or bi-weekly. To participate, your dog must be at least one-year-old, have current vaccination records, and have completed obedience training (or have proof of good temperament from your veterinarian).

You can discover whether or not your pet would make a good volunteer by reading our information page. If your pet would bring smiles to patients' faces, learn how to apply.
