Apply to be a Shands at UF Volunteer

We are pleased that you are interested in volunteering at Shands at the University of Florida. There are four different volunteer programs.


General Volunteers

  1. Attend hospital orientation.
  2. Complete Volunteer Application (.pdf).
  3. Obtain copies of the following immunization records:
    1. MR (Measles and Rubella) – Copy of immunization record with date and Year of inoculation.
    2. Measles Booster – Copy of immunization record with date and year of inoculation.
    3. Current PPD/Tuberculosis Screening (within last 10 months). Pick up screening form in the volunteer office and take to Occupational Health between the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
    4. Varicella (Chicken Pox) – Verbal confirmation that you have had the Chicken Pox will be accepted.If you are interested in volunteering in the Emergency Room or Operating Room areas, you will be required to show proof of hepatitis vaccinations at the time of interview.
  4. To schedule an interview, please call 352.265.0360. Bring your completed volunteer application, a copy of all of the required immunization records, and the date you attended hospital orientation. The Volunteer Services Department is located on the first floor of Shands at UF, across from the Food Court, in Room 1223.
  5. Review additional information about being a general volunteer at Shands at UF.

Volunteen

Volunteens are between 14 and 17 years old and must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Applications are handled through the Volunteer Services Department, and volunteens are expected to work one day or two half-days a week during summer break.

If you would like to apply to Volunteer Services, please complete the following steps:

  1. Application: Please complete the Volunteen application (.pdf), and turn it in when you come in for your interview.
  2. Immunization: All potential volunteers must obtain copies of their immunization records, including MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), measles booster, current PPD test (within the last 10 months), and confirmation of Varicella (chicken pox). The PPD test or tuberculin skin test may be performed at the Shands Occupational Services office at no charge. Please note: The TB skin test is an annual requirement.
  3. Interview: After completing your application and obtaining proof of immunizations, please call 352.265.0360 to schedule an interview. Please bring your completed Volunteen application (.pdf) and a copy of your medical records to the Volunteer Services Department. The Volunteer Services Department is located on the first floor of Shands at UF, across from the Food Court, in Room 1223.
  4. Orientation: Attend hospital orientation either before or after your interview.
  5. Review additional information about being a Volunteen at Shands at UF.

Pet Therapy (Animals Heal Hearts)

If you would like to volunteer to participate in the Animals Heal Hearts program, please complete the following steps:

  1. Application: Complete the Animals Heal Hearts volunteer application (.pdf).
  2. Immunization: All potential volunteers must obtain copies of their immunization records, including MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), measles booster, current PPD test (within the last 10 months), and confirmation of Varicella (chicken pox). The PPD test or tuberculin skin test may be performed at the Shands Occupational Services office at no charge. Please note: The TB skin test is an annual requirement.
  3. Orientation: Attend hospital orientation before or after your interview.
  4. Obedience: Obtain verification that you and your pet have completed an obedience course or are a member of an organization. If you do not have proof or if you and your dog have not attended a course or joined an organization, then you can obtain verification of your dog’s good temperament from your veterinarian.
  5. Animal health certificate: Have your veterinarian complete a pet health certificate (.pdf).
  6. Interview: after steps one through five, please call 352.265.0360 to schedule an interview. Please bring your completed volunteer application, a copy of your medical records, animal obedience certificate, and animal health certificate to your interview at the Volunteer Services Department. The Volunteer Services Department is located on the first floor of Shands at UF, across from the Food Court, in Room 1223.
  7. Review additional information about being an AHH volunteer at Shands at UF.

Shands Hospital Auxiliary

The Shands Hospital Auxiliary is a service organization for adults that provides assistance to staff and comfort to patients. The Auxiliary also implements fundraising programs. Volunteers interested in joining the Auxiliary must meet the general requirements in addition to the requirements listed below:

  1. Complete Volunteer Application (.pdf).
  2. Time: Auxilians are expected to serve at least twice a month in their assigned service. The minimum service acceptable is 48 hours a year.
  3. Auxiliary meetings: Auxilians are asked to attend all general meetings of the auxiliary and individual service meetings when invited.
  4. Active member dues: Active members to the auxiliary are asked to pay $5 a year in dues.
