Admissions

Patients who know what to expect in a rehab program often have the best recovery. When you have more information about what to expect in our rehab program, you will be able to set more realistic goals for yourself.

What to bring

We recommend that you bring loose comfortable clothing and personal articles, such as:

  • Sweat pants or slacks
  • T-shirts
  • Sweater
  • Shorts
  • Loose shirts or tops
  • Underwear, socks, pajamas
  • Athletic shoes or rubber-soled shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Reading materials

The beginning

Once admitted, your physician works with you and the rehab therapists to determine your rehab needs. Patients and physicians discuss and set realistic goals for recovery. Goals could include returning to work after an injury or reestablishing the quality of life experienced before the injury. These goals are shared with the family and healthcare team and may be revised to reflect your progress and personal choices.

Daily activities

Most of the patient’s time is spent in the therapy gym. Patients receive one-on-one therapy for three or more hours each day. Depending on the patient's goals, the patient works with:

  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Recreational therapists
  • Rehab nurses

New skills

Patients also are taught new ways to take care of everyday activities such as bathing and dressing.

Family support

Family involvement in the rehabilitation process is encouraged. Therapeutic training sessions with therapists and nurses is scheduled with family members.

Financial arrangements

Patients at Shands Rehab Hospital sign admission papers upon arrival. If the patient is unable to sign, a family member can sign the forms. These forms must be signed within 48 hours of admission.

To make this process go smoothly, patients should bring:

  • Insurance cards - Shands Rehab Hospital is Medicare and Medicaid certified and accepts managed care and private insurance plans
  • Copy of auto insurance and the accident report, if injured in a motor vehicle accident

Your daily room charge includes your room, nursing care and meals. Our hospital bills separately for X-rays, laboratory tests, medications and medical supplies. Doctor's fees are not included in our hospital charges. Patients are billed separately by their doctor.
