Shands Lake Shore serving unmet needs for area people with diabetes

Shands Lake Shore has received a diabetes education grant from the Florida Rural Health Network. The grant serves an unmet educational need for citizens of Columbia, Suwannee and Union counties who have diabetes.

“This grant provides Shands Lake Shore resources to provide free individualized education for people with diabetes,” said Wendy Fisher, RD, LD, clinical dietitian, Shands Lake Shore. “The education is expected to help people with diabetes learn how to control their disease and improve the quality of their lives. This includes reducing the number of visits to their doctors and re-admissions to the hospital.”

Anyone interested in this free education must have diabetes and a recent Hemoglobin A1C test measuring greater than 6.5. This test measures blood glucose levels. As part of the grant, Fisher and Vicki DeFore, RN will educate participants individually based on the A1C measurements.

For more information about these services please call Vicki DeFore, RN at 386-754-8000, ext. 1779.
