University of Florida urologists practicing at Shands at UF offer hospital, surgical and outpatient
healthcare services including:
- Female urology (urinary
incontinence and pelvic outlet relaxation disorders)
- Pediatric urology (congenital obstructions,
vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias,
and cloacal exstrophy)
- Kidney transplantation
- Laparascopic surgery (minimally invasive techniques for
nephrectomy, unroofing lymphoceles,
variococelectomy, renal biopsy,
cyst excision, pyeloplasty, lymph node dissection and other procedures)
- Neurology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and
erectile dysfunction or
impotence)
- Shands Robotic Prostatectomy
is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing cancerous prostates
in men. Utilizing an advanced robotic-assisted surgical system, University of
Florida urologists specially trained in robotic surgeries perform small-incision
prostate surgeries that deliver outstanding results.
- Urinary tract stones
(calculi) / endourology (minimally invasive therapy for kidney stones and other diseases
of the urinary tract)
- Urologic oncology (one of the few centers in the Southeast to be fully qualified by
the National Cancer Institute for using experimental drugs and protocols for the
treatment of bladder and prostate cancer)
- Vasectomies

Clinical Enhancements
Shands at the University of Florida is in the process of adding new services
and multidisciplinary clinics to continue providing the highest level of patient
care that is expected from a premier academic medical center.
Services currently available or slated to begin in 2007 include:
- A multi-specialty cancer clinic in collaboration with the department of
radiation oncology, complete with a medical genitourinary oncologist who will participate in and oversee this multidisciplinary effort
- A procedure room in the Urology
clinic at the Shands Medical Plaza to
accommodate minor surgical and diagnostic procedures
- A minimally invasive surgery program that supports clinical procedures and
provides opportunities to develop innovative technologies
- Cryosurgery or high frequency
radioablation (HIFU) for patients with prostate
and renal malignancies
- Robot-assisted laparoscopy procedures with a special emphasis on developing
new surgical techniques leading to optimal oncologic outcomes while minimizing morbidity
- An innovative clinical trial using a vascular targeted, minimally invasive treatment
approach for prostate cancer
is expected to launch in summer 2007
- Further expansion of our urology clinical services, especially in areas other
than urologic oncology
Access Improvements
We are implementing practice models to improve service for our
referring and community physicians, patients and UF faculty.
- We have significantly expanded our outpatient services at Shands Medical
Plaza to provide better access for our patients and have increased our clinic
space from six to 12 examination rooms.
- The UF Urology Web Site
and Shands.org are being
updated to include important information about urologic diseases, UF faculty,
services, and the mechanisms available to refer patients for consultations or for
information to enroll in one of our clinical trials.
