Lung Diseases
Pulmonary medicine is the specialty that studies and treats diseases and
other conditions affecting the lungs. Pulmonary
specialists offer a variety of outpatient and inpatient services, including
the direct care and management of critically ill patients in the medical intensive
care unit.
Shands at the University of Florida has a fully equipped Pulmonary Functions
Laboratory. Testing capabilities include:
- Cardiopulmonary exercise
- Bronchial challenge
- High altitude simulation
There is also a bronchoscopy suite equipped with fluoroscopy equipment. This
equipment enables:
- Lung biopsies
- Transbronchial needle aspiration
- Placement of brachytherapy catheters
- Placement of tracheal and bronchial stents
Clinical specialties include:
- Asthma, especially management of the difficult asthmatic
- Chronic bronchitis
- Sarcoidosis
- Pneumonia and walking pneumonia
- Lung abscess
- Lung cancer
- Interstitial lung disease (lung fibrosis)
- Chronic obstructive lung disease
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Lung transplantation (including pretransplant consultation and care)
- Primary pulmonary hypertension
- Pulmonary thromboembolic disease (pulmonary emboli)
- Respiratory failure
- Adult cystic fibrosis
- Sleep apnea syndrome and related
complications
- Tuberculosis and atypical tuberculosis
- Bronchiectasis
