Kidney Disorders

Nephrology is the medical discipline for the kidneys and kidney disease. Nephrologists diagnose and treat patients with kidney disease and hypertension. Subspecialists within nephrology - transplant nephrologists - treat patients who have had or need a kidney transplant.

University of Florida nephrologists provide care both in inpatient and outpatient settings at Shands at the University of Florida and Shands Medical Plaza in a hypertension clinic and two general nephrology clinics. Inpatient consult teams evaluate patients who have a wide variety of acute and chronic renal, hypertensive and electrolyte disorders. They perform percutaneous kidney biopsies and manage patients that require either acute or chronic dialysis.

Clinical specialties include:

  • Percutaneous kidney biopsies and diagnostic pathology services to help manage renal disease
  • Peritoneal and hemodialysis training for managing end-stage renal disease, including a growing home program
  • Advanced, well-equipped, in-hospital dialysis unit for treating acute renal failure
  • Large outpatient hemodialysis facility for treating end-stage renal disease
