At the Shands AGH Mother/Baby Unit, we encourage learning and offer ongoing education for infants' families. The staff continuously includes families in the assessment and care of their newborn.

Infant Care

  • Feeding: Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, highly trained nurses provide instruction and assistance.
  • Basic care: We coordinate and explain bathing, temperature taking, positioning, umbilical cord care, and diapering.

Mother Care

  • Post delivery: Perineal and/or incisional care
  • Breast care: Including breast self-exam.
  • Education: Includes a video library featuring videos ranging from basic baby care to advanced breastfeeding techniques.

The Mother/Baby Unit staff consists of knowledgeable and experienced individuals, including:

  • Registered nurses
  • Certified nursing assistants
  • Lactation consultants
  • Unit secretaries

In addition to your obstetrician and pediatrician, a neonatal nurse practitioner is on-call 24 hours a day should your infant need emergent care. The Mother/Baby Unit responds around the clock for breastfeeding assistance.
