FAQ About Maternal/Child Services at Shands AGH

Here are common questions asked about Maternal/Child Services at Shands AGH.

What are the visiting hours?

Family and friends are welcome to visit you and your new baby while you are a patient at Shands AGH. Visiting hours are 11 am to 9 pm While visiting, an adult must accompany all children under the age of 14. One person over the age of 14 may spend the night with you and your infant. We ask family visitors who are ill to refrain from visiting you in the hospital.

Who will complete my baby’s birth certificate?

The unit secretary will provide you with a birth certificate information packet containing a “mock” birth certificate. After you have filled this out, a final birth certificate will be generated for mom and dad to sign. We provide you with a form to request birth certificates for your records after you are discharged.

Will my son be circumcised at the hospital?

Per your request, your pediatrician can tell you if they will perform a circumcision in our nursery or at their office. If you come to the hospital without a pediatrician selected or with a pediatrician who does not have privileges here, the hospital neonatology group will provide you with names and numbers of physician groups who perform circumcisions.

I plan to bottle-feed. What formula should I use?

Shands AGH carries three brands of formula, as well as their soy counterparts:

  • Carnation Good Start
  • Enfamil
  • Similac

If you are a member of the WIC program, please plan to use Carnation – this is what the program will issue checks for. Otherwise, formula choice is just that – your choice. If you plan to use a formula we do not carry, please bring it with you to the hospital.

When will we be discharged?

On average, vaginal deliveries stay 24 to 48 hours, and C-section deliveries stay 48 to 72 hours. Both you and your infant must have discharge orders from your doctors before you can leave the hospital.

What if I am discharged, but my baby has to stay another day or more?

Depending on the number of patient beds available, Shands AGH may provide you with a room to “board” in with your infant. You will have a bed, phone and television. However, food, medication, nursing and maid service are not provided. Your nurse will provide you with more details should you become eligible to board.

How many people are allowed in the delivery room?

You are allowed to have up to six labor-support people in the delivery room with you. However, your healthcare provider or nurse has the right to ask people to leave the room if an emergency arises.

Are cameras allowed in the delivery room?

You or your family's video cameras and cameras can be used before and after delivery. However, the moment of delivery cannot be filmed or photographed.
