10/7/2008 - The revolutionary Aquilion One arrives at Shands at the University of Florida. The Aquilion One, a 320-detector row CT scanner, is capable of viewing the blood flow through the heart or the brain in a heartbeat - literally. This, along with faster, clearer images and potentially lower radiation dose, may revolutionize imaging. The new imaging scanner is one of 10 worldwide and will assist greatly in treatment of stroke and heart attack patients. 6/24/2008 Shands at the University of Florida was designated as a primary stroke center by the Agency for Health Care Administration. 5/1/2008 Shands at UF opened North Central Florida's first dedicated Neuro Intensive Care Unit. 5/1/2008 The University of Florida Heart Surgery program at Shands Jacksonville earned a three-star rating for being among the top 12 percent of programs in the U.S. from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). 4/28/2008 Shands won the 2008 Governor's Sterling Award - the state's top honor for performance excellence. 1/23/2008 Moffitt Cancer Center, Shands and UF joined forces to improve cancer care. They will work together to develop world-class programs for cancer care, research and prevention. 4/10/2007 UF Physicians began using da Vinci robot for surgeries. This robot enables complex, minimally invasive surgeries. 1/11/2007 Construction for a 500,000-square-foot cancer hospital at the University of Florida begins. This $388-million investment will bring state-of-the-art cancer treatments to North Central Florida. 11/4/2006 Shands Jacksonville was first hospital in Southeast with VeinViewer. VeinViewer takes away the need for multiple needle pricks, essentially giving a nurse x-ray vision. 10/20/2006 Shands Jacksonville was designated as the first comprehensive stroke program in Northeast Florida by the Joint Commission and the Agency for Healthcare Administration. 10/13/2006 Shands Jacksonville became first in the Southeast to use Proton Therapy for cancer patients. 9/29/2006 UF physicians implanted state's first Berlin Heart. A 9-year-old boy received Florida's first Berlin Heart, a mechanical heart device sized specifically for children. 1/1/2006 Congenital Heart Center at UF was established. 9/15/2004 UF Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute opened. |
